Stove Glass Replacement FAQ — Common Questions from Homeowners in Dublin & Wicklow

If your stove glass is cracked, cloudy, or leaking heat, you’re not alone. Below are the most common questions homeowners ask about stove glass replacement — including fitting, costs, safety, and maintenance.

Stove glass should be replaced once it is cracked, chipped, shattered, or heat-damaged. Unlike standard window glass, stove glass is a specialist glass-ceramic material designed to withstand extreme temperatures produced by wood-burning and multi-fuel stoves.

If your stove glass is cracked, clouded, or broken, continuing to use the stove is unsafe. Cracked stove glass can fail suddenly when reheated, allowing smoke, sparks, or dangerous combustion gases to escape into the room.

At P Fahy Glazing Ltd, we supply and fit genuine ROBAX® heat-resistant stove glass, engineered to withstand temperatures of up to 760°C with near-zero thermal expansion. In most cases, the stove door can be removed and the glass replaced the same day at our Bray workshop.

All modern solid fuel, wood-burning, and multi-fuel stoves use ceramic stove glass, most commonly ROBAX® glass-ceramic.

Although it looks similar to normal glass, ceramic stove glass behaves completely differently:

  • Withstands extreme heat without cracking

  • Resists thermal shock from rapid heating and cooling

  • Does not expand or warp under temperature stress

  • Remains clear and stable over long-term use

Standard glass, toughened glass, laminated glass, or window glass must never be used in a stove. These materials typically fail at temperatures above 200°C and will shatter when exposed to direct flame.

All stove glass supplied by P Fahy Glazing Ltd is genuine ROBAX®, sourced from certified distributors and cut in-house.

If you don’t know the exact size of your stove glass, that’s not a problem.

For quoting purposes, a rough measurement of the visible glass area is usually sufficient. The actual glass panel typically sits behind the metal frame and is slightly larger than what you see from the outside.

You can also send us:

  • A photo of the stove door (inside and outside)

  • The stove make and model, if known

This often allows us to confirm the correct sizing before cutting. Final measurements are always checked before fitting to ensure safe clearance for heat expansion.

If you’re unsure, the simplest option is to remove the stove door and bring it to our Bray workshop, where we’ll measure and cut the glass accurately.

Yes — some customers choose to fit stove glass themselves, especially when ordering a cut-to-size replacement panel.

Correct fitting is essential. The glass must:

  • Sit on a rope seal (gasket)

  • Be held by clips that are snug, not tight

  • Have room to expand when heated

The most common cause of cracked replacement glass is overtightened clips, which leave no expansion space as the stove heats up.

If you prefer, we can professionally fit the glass at our workshop, ensuring:

  • Even pressure across the panel

  • Proper sealing

  • Safe long-term performance

Most stove doors are designed to be removed easily.

Typically:

  • Open the door fully

  • Lift upward to disengage it from the hinges

Some models use retaining pins or stops, while others lift straight off. The glass itself is usually held in place by metal clips or screws around the inside edge of the door.

We are based in Bray, Co. Wicklow (A98 DW32), where all stove glass cutting and fitting is carried out in-house.

Customers regularly visit us from:

  • Bray

Many customers travel to us each winter for fast, reliable, same-day stove glass replacement.

ROBAX® is the global industry standard for stove and fireplace glass and is used by all major stove manufacturers.

Compared to standard or toughened glass:

  • Standard glass can fail above ~200°C

  • ROBAX® remains stable up to 760°C

  • ROBAX® has near-zero thermal expansion

  • It resists cracking from heat stress and sudden cooling

This makes it significantly safer, longer-lasting, and more reliable for stove use while maintaining excellent optical clarity so you can enjoy a clear view of the fire.

The most common causes of stove glass failure include:

  • Over-tightened metal clips restricting expansion

  • Poor-quality or non-ceramic replacement glass

  • Physical impact from logs pressing against the glass

  • Closing the stove door with a log protruding

  • Worn or missing rope seals

  • General age-related stress combined with heat cycles

During every replacement, we check clip tension, clearances, and seal condition to ensure the new glass remains secure and crack-free long term.

Not always — but it is strongly recommended if the stove is a few years old.

The rope seal (gasket):

  • Creates an airtight seal between glass and door

  • Prevents smoke and fumes escaping

  • Maintains proper combustion and efficiency

If the rope is flattened, brittle, or frayed, it should be replaced. Once the door is removed, it’s easy to assess the condition. Replacing the rope seal is inexpensive and greatly improves safety and performance.

In most cases, stove glass replacement is completed the same day.

  • Glass-only supply can often be cut within the hour

  • Door drop-off replacements are typically completed within a few hours

More complex jobs — such as seized clips or seal replacement — may take slightly longer, but we aim to have stoves back in service as quickly as possible, especially during the heating season.

This is very common on older stoves.

Heat exposure and corrosion can cause clips or screws to seize. Forcing them can snap bolts or damage the door. If clips won’t loosen safely, bring the door to us.

We can:

  • Drill out seized fixings

  • Replace damaged clips

  • Refit the glass correctly

There is a small additional charge, but we always explain costs upfront before proceeding.

Blackened stove glass is usually caused by poor combustion, not faulty glass.

Common causes include:

  • Burning wet or unseasoned wood

  • Restricted airflow

  • Worn door seals allowing poor draw

  • Running the stove too low for long periods

  • General wear on older stoves

Replacing cracked or stained glass improves visibility, but proper fuel and airflow are essential to keep the glass clear long term.

Yes. We can cut shaped and arched stove glass to match your existing panel exactly. This includes arched tops, angled sides, notched edges, and bespoke shapes commonly found on both modern and older stove doors.

All shaped stove glass is cut in-house using genuine ROBAX® ceramic glass, allowing us to accurately replicate the original size, thickness, corner radii, and profile. If you bring in the stove door or the original glass (even if broken), we can use it as a template to ensure a precise fit with the correct expansion clearances for safe operation.

Most shaped and arched stove glass panels can still be cut and fitted the same day, depending on complexity.

No — fully curved or cylindrical stove glass cannot be cut or replicated in our workshop. This type of glass is manufactured using specialised forming processes and must be supplied directly by the original stove manufacturer.

True curved stove glass is relatively rare and is typically found on specific contemporary stove models. Unfortunately, replacement curved glass is extremely difficult to source in Ireland, and in many cases is no longer available once a model is discontinued.

If your stove uses fully curved glass, replacement is only possible through the manufacturer or an authorised distributor. Where this isn’t available, the only alternatives are manufacturer-led retrofits or, in some cases, stove replacement.

We’re always happy to assess photos of your stove and confirm whether the glass is shaped/arched (which we can cut) or genuinely curved (which cannot be replicated safely).
